Following the renewal of the BMW X5 in 2018, here is the third generation of the X6, its SUV – Coupe counterpart. This time, sportsmanship is much more claimed to stand out from the X5. No question of going for a simple variant of this last recarrossee…
The best way to dominate a niche is still to invent it. The BMW X6 is a case study of this principle, since it is the founder (and long remained sole representative) of one of the most controversial segments of the automotive landscape. Already a classic SUV does not smell of sanctity or autophobes of any kind… or purists. This was the case initially, in any case. Which did not stop this curious mix of genres, halfway between SUV and coupe – 4 doors (another marketing heresy) to become a worldwide success rather quickly.
Concretely, this translated into more than 450,000 X6 in 11 years. So much so that almost all other premium manufacturers have launched their rival X6 in turn. It took a bit of time: Mercedes launched its GLE Coupe in 2015, Lamborghini the Urus at the end of 2017, Audi the Q8 in 2018 and Porsche unsheathed its Cayenne Coupe in early 2019. The principle was even applied to the lower shoe size. BMW X4, Mercedes GLC Coupe… and Audi Q3 Sportback, another step below!
Unlike its predecessors, the third X6 of the name took great care to stand out from the most classic and very massive X5. A host of styling elements are specific to him, from the grille (the bean is reversed, new signature of the coupés of the brand) to the stern: no bodywork element in common, the leaking roof line leaves a fastback silhouette more pronounced than before (and less loaded in folds and ridges), much more athletic than X5. The X6 is 49 mm lower, all the same, and slightly longer (4.94 m or 2 cm).
The sporting bias is understandable, to counter competition now sharpened and… a bit flashy. The ostentation part of these SUVs a little special, BMW was not afraid to dare to flank the X6 grille a backlight. Useless? Yes, pure gadget (550 €) that will have the merit to speak and stand out. Since it is not a main lighting, no problem of approval to keep it on while driving. Original.
Liters and crystal
Inevitably, the cutting of the roof has amputated the trunk of a few liters: 650 l X5, the hold of the X6 drops to 580 l. It is still 30 l better than the previous one, and the volume climbs to 1.530 folded bench. No problem for occasional removals, or bring luggage from four occupants. Note that they are better and better received at the back, over generations. The door opening is a little narrower than the X5’s, but the slightly lower bench seat and the overcast roof top provide a roof guard that is quite comparable to any conventional SUV. The wheelbase is identical to that of the X5, it is the same for the habitability.
The report also applies to the interior atmosphere (the dashboard is identical) and the care given to the finish, royal. Real luxury, a bit flashy sometimes to seduce some markets, but promised: the box head auto crystal 800 € is not mandatory. The technological content (comparable to the X5) is classic at this level of the range: digital instrumentation, pushed connected functions, and driving aids.
2 tons and sport, really?
Talking about sports SUV is already contradictory in itself. For these behemoths, the efficiency necessarily goes through an avalanche of assistance without which we would not allow a quarter of what we sometimes dare… The reference of the genre being the Porsche Cayenne Coupe, we expect to be a little disappointed. Not really, actually. Certainly, the 2,235 kg of our test version M50i kill the brakes and gums in use a minimum intensive . But four-wheel steering and all-wheel drive serve here as a magic formula: we wind with a disturbing facility, as the car seems to sit and sequences erased effortlessly.
The feeling remains sanitized, and some vertical movements remain on the wrong road, but can it be otherwise without air suspension (unavailable on our M50i)? A Cayenne does better on this point, it’s true. Even so, the active anti-roll bars are a perfect match for sideways movements (3.650 € with the rear wheels)… without penalizing the comfort, hushed to perfection. The compromise is remarkable for a classic steel suspension decked with huge 21-inch wheels.
This time, the suspensions and some of the ground links of the X6 are specific to him, where the previous ones shared a chassis almost identical to the X5. However, if the sporting feeling is a bit more biting than driving an X5, the benefit remains marginal… And in 99% of cases, it will be just as comfortable on winding road. It is all the interest of the X6 and its congeners that could be questioned: why? For the look, and his mind a little whimsical, simply. As if the choice of a car should always be rational.
It will provide 6.300 € extension compared to the X5. Supplement partly explained by the specific chassis… and exclusivity, we will say. The X6 30d starts at € 79,100 , slightly more expensive than an Audi Q8 with comparable engine (€ 78,300).
But the BMW is much cheaper than its best enemy, especially in its higher versions. Our M50i is asking for € 101,650, while a Porsche Cayenne Turbo Coupé is around € 150,000. Its extra 20 bhp and its slightly richer technological content do not really justify this huge gap. As for the M50d billed € 103,600, its tariff risks confining it to a role of technological showcase.
