A piracy close to Tom Cruise in Mission Impossible and realized in a few minutes.
At a conference in China, a team of hackers has demonstrated that it is possible to deceive the fingerprint reader of a smartphone by recovering a fingerprint left on an object.
A simple impression on a glass of water
As reported by the South China Morning Post website, a member of the team, a certain Chen Yu, invited a member of the public to touch a glass of water. The hacker then captured a photo of the fingerprint and then tucked it into an application to extract the data. Twenty minutes later, the fingerprint was recreated and the phone unlocked. The operation was carried out three times successfully. A system that is not unlike that of a certain Ethan Hawke, aka Tom Cruise in Mission Impossible, as everything happens eventually…
Of course, the team does not give details on the application used nor on the materials that reproduce the footprint. We just know that the necessary equipment costs less than $ 140.
This demonstration proves once more that no system is foolproof. Lately, Qualcomm’s ultrasonic fingerprint reader, which is built into the Galaxy S10 and Note 10, has been deceived by a simple protective film. A situation all the more serious that it is now possible to make payments and to authenticate with his fingerprint.
